FEATURED STORY 🔥

Texas Rolls Out AI for Student Exam Grading

Texas is testing an AI scoring system on state exams, aiming to cut costs by reducing human graders.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) introduced the system for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), which now features more open-ended questions. The AI, trained on thousands of previously graded responses, is expected to save $15-20 million annually.

This year, only 2,000 human graders will be hired, down from 6,000. To ensure accuracy, a quarter of AI-graded exams will be rechecked by people, along with any answers the AI finds confusing.

Despite potential savings, some educators are wary after a district reported a rise in zero scores with the AI's limited use in December 2023. The TEA emphasizes that their AI system is secure and unique.
