FEATURED STORY 🔥

OpenAI Drama Over… For Now

On November 17, OpenAI's board made a significant decision by firing CEO and co-founder Sam Altman, leading to President Greg Brockman's resignation and Mira Murati's appointment as interim CEO. The next day, COO Brad Lightcap clarified that Altman's dismissal was due to communication issues, not misconduct. This event sparked a strong reaction from Khosla Ventures, an early investor, advocating for Altman's return. Simultaneously, OpenAI employees were divided, with some considering resignation if Altman wasn't reinstated, while others showed interest in joining his potential new venture.

By November 19, discussions about Altman's possible return were underway, alongside his contemplation of launching a new AI startup. The situation escalated on November 20, with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announcing the hiring of Altman, Brockman, and their team for a new AI research project. That same day, OpenAI named former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear as interim CEO and explored a merger with rival Anthropic. The company faced a critical moment as nearly all staff threatened to leave for Microsoft unless the board resigned.

Investors also reacted, considering legal action against the board. Finally, on November 21, OpenAI announced Altman's return as CEO, alongside a new initial board including Bret Taylor, Larry Summers, and Adam D'Angelo, with Brockman also rejoining the startup. This series of events highlights the tumultuous and dynamic nature of leadership and decision-making within major tech companies.

The dramatic chronological order of events:

Nov. 17 - OpenAI board fires CEO, co-founder Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman quits after being removed from the board. The company names Mira Murati as interim CEO.

Nov. 18 - Altman's firing was over a "breakdown in communication between Sam and the board," and not "malfeasance", COO Brad Lightcap says in an internal memo. Early investor Khosla Ventures says it wants Altman back at OpenAI, "but will back him in whatever he does next". Some employees contemplated quitting if Altman was not restored as CEO by the end of the weekend, while others expressed support for joining his new venture, people familiar with the matter said

Nov. 19 - Altman discusses a possible return to the company and considers launching a new AI startup.

Nov. 20 - Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella hires Altman, Brockman, and their colleagues to lead a new advanced AI research team. OpenAI appoints former Twitch boss Emmett Shear as interim CEO. OpenAI board approaches rival Anthropic's CEO on a merger. Nearly all OpenAI staff threaten to quit and join Altman at Microsoft if the board doesn't resign. Some investors in OpenAI explore legal recourse against the company's board.

Nov. 21 - OpenAI said Altman will return as CEO with a new initial board of Bret Taylor, Larry Summers, and Adam D'Angelo. Brockman will also return to the startup.
