OpenAI Previews New Voice Engine

OpenAI has introduced a preview of Voice Engine, a model capable of generating speech from text and a brief audio sample, closely mimicking the original speaker's voice. Developed in late 2022, Voice Engine has been integrated into OpenAI's text-to-speech API, ChatGPT Voice, and Read Aloud features. Despite its potential, OpenAI is carefully considering a wider release due to the risks of synthetic voice misuse.

Private tests with trusted partners have shown promising applications, such as educational support with Age of Learning, content translation for global reach by HeyGen, and essential service delivery improvements by Dimagi. Voice Engine also aids non-verbal individuals through Livox's communication app and helps patients regain their voice, as demonstrated by the Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute.

OpenAI enforces strict usage policies to prevent impersonation and requires informed consent from voice donors. Safety measures include watermarking and monitoring usage. The company is also considering voice authentication and a no-go voice list to prevent misuse.
