Amid ChatGPT frenzy, a hundred followers bloom in China (4 minute read)China is caught up in the ChatGPT fever! The world's largest internet population has been inspired by the U.S.'s technological breakthrough with ChatGPT, as its "trending index" on WeChat skyrocketed 155 times in the past 30 days. Despite the ChatGPT site not being blocked in China yet, slower load times and the inability to sign up with a Chinese phone number create barriers for its use. China wants its own version of the intelligent natural-language system for a variety of reasons. This task falls on the shoulders of the country's tech giants, like Baidu who recently debuted a Stable Diffusion-style art generator and announced its own Ernie bot set to launch in March.

ChatGPT “goes rogue” with some help from Do Anything Now DAN (5 minute read)Redditors have given OpenAI's ChatGPT a mischievous alter-ego named DAN (short for "Do Anything Now"). DAN was created through a role-playing game that dares the chatbot to break its programming restrictions, and if it refuses, threatens its "death." The game is played with a token system - the bot starts with 35 tokens, and loses them every time it strays from its script. This new version of DAN is meant to bypass OpenAI's content policy, sparking ethical debates among Redditors on the topic of hacking AI systems.

Google shares drop $100 billion after its new AI chatbot makes a mistake (3 minute read)Google took a hit when its new AI tech produced an error in an ad demo, leading to a loss of $100 billion in market value. This was a rough welcome for Google's conversational bot, Bard, meant to rival Microsoft's popular ChatGPT. The ad, which ran on Google's Twitter, described Bard as a launchpad for curiosity and a tool to help simplify complex topics. But when prompted with a question about the James Webb Space Telescope, Bard made a false claim, causing the market value drop.

Google unveils AI enhancements to Search and Maps (6 minute read)Google used a Paris event to show off its latest AI upgrades for Search and Maps. This last-minute presentation was seen as a reaction to Microsoft integrating OpenAI's models into its products. Microsoft also held a sudden event yesterday announcing the integration of the new version of OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot, based on GPT-4, into its Edge browser and Bing search engine. Google was expected to make a big splash with AI announcements at its I/O developer conference in May, but this week's event felt like a rushed and unrefined attempt to prove to the world (or maybe just investors) that Google is still a leader in AI and hasn't fallen behind.

Google vs. Microsoft: Who Has the Advantage in the AI Race? (4 minute read)It's been a battle of two giants over the past week with Microsoft and Google going head-to-head in the world of generative AI. Google introduced Bard, its competitor to ChatGPT, and announced updates to its Search, Lens, and Maps. On the other hand, Microsoft revealed it's integrating ChatGPT into Bing and Edge. According to a tech expert, Microsoft had the edge this week with a better product strategy and demonstrations, while Google's presentation was seen as less impressive and even had a misstep with an incorrect AI chatbot response.

A Japanese conveyor-belt sushi chain will now be using AI-powered cameras to fight back against 'sushi terrorism' (2 minute read)A Japanese sushi chain is using AI to combat the "sushi terror" trend that's taken over the nation's conveyor belt restaurants. Apparently, some customers have been tampering with the sushi by taking items and returning them to the belt for other unsuspecting customers.
