Nvidia GPU shortage is ā€˜top gossipā€™ of Silicon Valley (4 minute read)
As the insatiable demand for compute-hungry generative AI continues unabated, the buzz around which companies managed to score Nvidia's elusive, wallet-crunching H100 GPU for training large language models has become the talk of the town in Silicon Valley. Andrej Karpathy, former AI director at Tesla and now with OpenAI, confirmed this juicy tidbit. Even big tech giants are chiming in on the GPU drama, with Microsoft recently including discussions about GPU access in their annual reports. They made it clear to investors that GPUs are like precious raw materials for their rapidly growing cloud business, and the lack of proper infrastructure could lead to potential outages.

SEC turns its gaze from crypto to AI (3 minute read)
Gary Gensler, the chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has shifted his focus from cryptocurrency to the realm of AI. Despite his previous concerns and vocal stance on the risks associated with cryptocurrencies, Gensler now views AI as the technology that truly "warrants the hype" and deserves more attention from regulators. As an MIT professor, Gensler explored AI, co-authoring a significant paper in 2020 that highlighted the risks posed by deep learning in the financial system. His deep-rooted worries about the potential implications of widespread AI automation in the finance sector have prompted him to reassess regulatory approaches. While acknowledging the immense benefits of AI's predictive capabilities for financial firms and their clients, Gensler also recognizes the significant risks that need to be carefully addressed.

The case for more AI in politics (5 minute read)
The future of artificial intelligence in politics is quietly making its presence felt, and digital strategist Eric Wilson, the managing partner at Startup Caucus, an incubator for Republican campaign tech, has been a witness to its evolution. From using machine learning algorithms for social media and email spam filters during Marco Rubio's 2016 campaign to exploring the current wave of generative AI, Wilson recognizes AI's potential to be a disruptive force in the 2024 election cycle. While we may have seen a handful of AI-enhanced ads during the opening stages of the race, Wilson assures us that this is just the beginning. AI is already at work beneath the surface of politics in more subtle and less dramatic ways.

Meta releases AI tools to create music from text prompts (3 minute read)
In an exciting move, Meta (formerly Facebook) has made some AI magic available to the world by releasing code and model weights for AI tools that can turn text-based prompts into sound! This means game developers and creators of digital worlds can now easily add background audio alongside their visuals. Meta is not holding back with their offerings either - they've introduced three research tools under the cool name "AudioCraft." MediaGen, one of these tools, is all about creating music from text and has been trained using Meta's very own music collection. The company's strategy is clear: they want to encourage wide adoption of their AI tools, just like they did with the free-for-commercial-use release of Llama 2 last month.

AI.com once took you to ChatGPT. Now, it goes to Elon Musk's xAI (3 minute read)
Who owns AI.com and what they're doing with it? This is the question that everybody wants to know. The domain, which used to direct to ChatGPT, now redirects users to xAI, an AI company owned by Elon Musk. Separate from X Corp, xAI claims on its website that it "will work closely with X," the social media company formerly known as Twitter ā€” including using posts on X as training for its large language model. The high-value AI.com domain name changed hands in 2021, sat idle for a while, and then suddenly started redirecting to ChatGPT in February before changing over to xAI.

Boston Dynamicsā€™ Founder on the Future of Robotics (2 minute read)
When Marc Raibert founded Boston Dynamics back in 1992, little did he know that it would evolve into a leading authority in legged robots, boasting impressive creations like the Atlas biped and Spot quadruped. Initially unsure if it would be a robotics or simulation company, Boston Dynamics has found its stride in the robotics world. While the company focuses on commercializing its technology, Raibert is now setting his sights on a grand vision for robotics. His ambition is to teach robots to observe humans performing tasks, understand what they see, and replicate those actions themselves. He also aims to equip robots with the ability to recognize when they don't comprehend something, ask questions to bridge knowledge gaps, and even conduct equipment inspections to diagnose issues and carry out repairs.
